He graduated from Jamulpo High School and later obtained a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Studies from the Korea National Open University. He made his debut in 1996 as part of the 5th open recruitment for comedians at SBS but he spent many years in obscurity as his messy appearance and the way he talked was not liked by the audience. He began gaining popularity when he presented a parody of dance music duo "Clon" alongside his high school friend, Yeom Kyung Hwan. Originally, Clon did not like the parody and thought about suing the comedians but changed their minds when they saw the full act. They even performed together on SBS "Inkigayo". He is known for his blunt humor and also for joining popular shows but quitting them for "being bored" such as "2 Days 1 Night" or"X-Man" and later admitting he regretted leaving so suddenly. He is currently represented by Image 9 Communications.

In 1991, Kim won the Grand Prize in the National College Comedy Contest, making his official debut in the South Korean entertainment industry. In the early 1990s, Kim was a part of a group of comedians who called themselves Team Potato (Hangul: 감자골), composed of Kim Gook-jin, Kim Soo-yong and Park Soo-hong, who all debuted in the same year on KBS. It had been reported that Kim himself had been admitted to hospital due to their busy schedule, and therefore Kim Gook-jin attempted to reason with television program producers to lighten their workload. However, this request was not received well by producers, who then decided it was necessary to permanently ban Team Potato from making appearances on television. As a result, in January 1993, the four comedians planned to leave South Korea for the U.S., taking a break from the South Korean entertainment industry, although ultimately, only Kim himself and Kim Gook-jin went to the United States of America, while Park began his compulsory army duty and Kim Soo-yong went to Canada.
In 2011, he hosted the 2011 SBS Entertainment Awards, along with Shin Bong-sun and Kim Won-hee. In 2012, Kim became a CEO when he and comedian Kim Soo-yong started an online website called StarLogin, which allows companies and businesses alike to easily contact South Korean celebrities, including entertainers, singers and comedians, for events such as lectures, festivals or corporate events.
After his gambling scandal, Kim had spent nearly three years inactive in the entertainment industry.
In 2015, he became a cast member of tvN's variety television program, Useful Men, making his first appearance on South Korean television since his career break that he took during his gambling scandal. He graduated from Gyeongseong Electronics High School and later obtained an associate's degree in Electronics from Dongeui Science University.
He worked with his best friend Kang Jun Woo in forming a band, and he finally made his debut in 2011 as vocalist and main guitarist of ROSE MOTEL. He later became known for his many appearances in variety shows, even becoming a regular cast member in "I Live Alone". In 2014, he won the Newstaker of the Year Award at the MBC Entertainment Awards, and one year later, he won the Best Entertainer Award at the SBS Entertainment Awards.
The band also enjoyed some success, and they added 2 more members in late 2012 (bringing the total up to 5) to help with the instruments. However, in 2018, he faced controversy when the band's agency announced they would disband. Almost immediately after the announcement, members Bae Sang Jae, Lim Kyung Seop and Yoon Jang Hyun decided to publish their own statement where they rejected the idea of being disbanded. They argued that the other two members (Yook and Kang) forced them to leave the band.
In 2019, he and Kang decided to form a duo called 6BAND or Yook Joong Wan's Band and continue to perform in many events, festivals and music shows.
