He debuted as a member of TVXQ under SM Entertainment in 2004, left the team in 2009 and formed the new group JYJ together with Park Yoochun and Kim Junsu after signing with C-JeS Studios.
Kim has branched out to act in dramas and films. He was also the Executive Director for JYJ's 2011 Worldwide Tour and the 2011 LG Whisen Rhythmic All Stars.
In January 2013, he released his first EP titled I, followed by a full-length album, WWW, in October of the same year. After his contract expired on April 22, 2023, he parted ways with C-JeS Studios after fourteen years.
On May 4, 2023, it was announced that he set up a new agency, iNKODE, together with CEO Noh Hyun Tae, the former vice president of Cube Entertainment.
