After the first season (2003-2004), due to ongoing knee issues and the challenges of balancing his entertainment career, he decided to retire from playing.
Initially, Yen intended to coach in the CBA but chose to decline any coaching positions temporarily. From 2008 until 2011, he served as an assistant coach for the U18 Asian Championship and the U19 World Championship men's basketball teams. In September 2011, he became a coach at Brigham Young University-Hawaii, planning to remain in the NCAA for two years.
