She grew up in Kobe and lost many friends in the Great Hanshin earthquake in 1995. As a child, she wanted to be a doctor, but by the time she reached high school, she was uncertain as to whether she could do that, and not sure what to do in the future. At around this time, she was scouted by a talent agency, and she decided to try the entertainment world. Her parents were initially opposed, but they gave their permission, on two conditions: that she gives up if she was making no progress within a year, and that she put her studies first and graduate from university. She majored in Commerce at Meiji University and graduated from the school in March of 2009.
She was an exclusive model for the Japanese Seventeen magazine from late 2003 to mid-2006 and left modeling when she left the magazine.
She has appeared in several films, including The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) and Handsome Suit (2008), and has played leading roles in the TV Dramas Mop Girl (2007), Homeroom on the Beachside (2008), Buzzer Beat (2009) and Lady Saigo no Hanzai Profile.
She describes herself as a stay-at-home person, and likes watching DVDs, listening to music, and reading books. When asked what she would do if the world was going to end tomorrow, she said: "Read books." She also likes swimming, particularly backstroke. She has a tomcat called Jill.
On January 11, 2016, she announced her marriage to DAIGO, a fellow actor. The two began dating a few years after acting together in "LADY". Their first daughter was born on 7 September 2020. On January 31, 2024 it was announced that they have welcomed their second child, a baby boy.
She is represented by Stardust Promotions.

In 2009, he was named one of the most promising actors and actresses, placing 8th in a poll conducted by Oricon. He is a former member of the Watanabe Entertainment group, D-BOYS.
Shirota lived in Barcelona, Spain from when he was three to about seven years. He returned to Japan for elementary school and can still speak Spanish in ordinary conversation. He attended high school at Horikoshi High along with NEWS member Yamashita Tomohisa, WaT's Teppei Koike, Japanese actor and singer Ikuta Toma and KAT-TUN's Akanishi Jin and Tanaka Koki.
According to Shirota, when he was little, his family liked to sing songs so that he would borrow his older sister's keyboard, while his mother taught him piano — thus spawned Shirota's love for composing. He composed his first piece when he was in the fourth grade, titled "The Tear".

From 1995 to 2000, he was a professional model. He took time off from modeling in 2002 to study acting more thoroughly. He did not go to an acting school after his high school graduation so he used this time to improve his skill. Though mainly a model from 1995 to 2002, he had bit parts in commercials and drama series. One of his more notable roles during his "time off" from acting was as Takeda-sensei, a teacher in the hit live-action adaptation of GTO.
In late 2004, it was announced that Shigeki would be the lead in the then upcoming season of the long running Kamen Rider franchise, Kamen Rider Hibiki. He drew fans from both the target demographic of children and housewives alike. His role as Hibiki garnered many good reviews from Japanese critics. After "Kamen Rider Hibiki" finished airing, he then landed the role of Taira no Shigehira in the Samurai Drama, Yoshitsune. Both Kamen Rider Hibiki and Yoshitsune aired in the 8:00 time slot, AM and PM respectively. Because both shows aired in different 8 o'clock timeslots, he has been given the nickname "The 8 o'clock man" in Japan. Hosokawa's next major role was that of the ill-fated F.B.I. agent, Raye Iwamatsu, in the live action adaptations of the Death Note manga. He then went on to play the father character in the TV movie, Kaigo Etoile (The Nursing Care Star) which will start its Japanese airing on September 18, 2006. He played the father of the main character. His role is that of an aging and divorced father who has developed dementia.
