After completing vocational school, Watanabe started his career in the film industry as a third assistant director on episodes 10 and 11 of "Choushinsei Flashman" in 1986. Initially hired as a temporary replacement for the hospitalized second assistant director, he continued with the series when the original assistant did not return. Watanabe was later promoted to second assistant director under Chief Assistant Director Morita Toshio and eventually became chief assistant director of "Choujin Sentai Jetman."
Although Watanabe initially aimed to be a screenwriter and pitched scripts to producer Suzuki Takeshi, his scripts were not used.
