She graduated from Sangmyung Girls’ High School and later obtained a bachelor's degree in Theater and Film from Seorabeol University of Arts.
She made her debut in 1965 as part of TBC 1st open recruitment for dancers after one of her college professors recommended her to the network. She never performed as a dancer as she was immediately selected for a role in the 1966 movie "Attendant Court Lady" (상궁나인으). However, she got pregnant in 1969 and because she was not yet married at the time, it caused a huge controversy among the public. She decided to quit acting and, in 1982, she moved to the United States where she remained for 7 years.
After her return to South Korea, she began acting in many sitcoms and participated as a panelist for many entertainment or social affairs programs. In 2009, she requested her stage name be changed from Sunwoo Yong Nyeo to Sunwoo Yong Yeo.
She is currently a professor in the Acting department at Seoul Hoseo Arts College.
