He graduated from Gudeok High School and later obtained an associate's degree in Practical Music from Woosong Information College.
He made his debut in January 2010 as the group's vocalist and visual with their first single album, "Nativity". Originally named Child of Empire, Star Empire Entertainment (스타제국) decided to officially establish it as ZE:A. However, they faced immediate controversy as it was very similar to Brown Eyed Girls member JeA. Both agencies began negotiations and agreed that ZE:A's pronunciation will be changed to avoid any confusion.
Afterwards, they enjoyed a lot of success and signed with Sony Music for promotional activities in 9 countries, mainly in Southeast Asia, where the group became incredibly popular in a short time.
He debuted as an actor in 2012 with a role in the MBC drama "Moon Embracing the Sun" (해를 품은 달) for which he received major praise. He began considering an acting career and he appeared in several other dramas afterwards.
His contract with Star Empire expired in January 2017 and rumors began circulating about a possible disbandment. However, the agency and the members released separate statements indicating that the group was now officially on an indefinite hiatus but was not disbanding.
He enlisted for his mandatory military service on July 11, 2017 and was discharged on March 27, 2019.
After his release, he signed with Plum A&C (플럼에이앤씨) and is focusing on his acting career.

After graduating from ChungAng University, Kang received his first prize at the Korea Youth Film Festival and Korea Scenario Awards in 1991.
Kang's most notable contributions to Korean cinema have been Shiri and Taegukgi. Shiri was the first big budget Hollywood-style action film made in Korea, which broke box office records and was partially responsible for the popularization of domestic films in the country. Taegukgi, directed five years later, again rewrote box office records, having been seen by over ten million people in South Korea alone.
After establishing his own production film company under his name, he merged it with Myung Film in 2005.
In an interview for the BBC special Asian Invasion, Kang revealed that he wanted his next project to be a science fiction film. He said, "I have produced two movies about Korea. So now I'm preparing a new movie that is related to something more global--a problem that the whole world is facing right now."
After a 7-year hiatus, in 2011 Kang unveiled his film My Way, set during World War II with a star-studded pan-Asian cast and the highest budget to date for a Korean film.", "image": "https://i.hndrama.com/image/people/7nA5Nc.jpg" } ]
